Among 32 million small businesses under a Small Business Administration’s (SBA) protected business classifications, fewer than 1% have completed certifying their business and are visible to commercial and government buyers.
Less Impact for More Spending
In FY21, $154.2 billion in federal contract dollars was afforded to small businesses, with $72 billion given to small-business subcontractors. Despite the overall increase from the previous year, the number of small businesses receiving prime contracts with the federal government decreased during the same period.
Supplier Spend Growing
In Fiscal Year 2024, small businesses captured roughly $183 billion in prime contracts, accounting for less than 29% of total contract awards — showing both opportunity and room for more inclusive access. Further, in the same period, nearly 75% of major corporations are expanding supplier development programs, with a 2025 target to direct 13% of spending to emerging suppliers.
